Ammonia terminal
At LBC Vlissingen, we are developing an industrial-scale greenfield ammonia import terminal in Northwestern Europe. This brand-new state-of-the-art facility is strategically located at the entrance of the Westerschelde Estuary in the North Sea Port of Vlissingen, the Netherlands, within the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.
The terminal will be constructed in phases, with the first phase focused on the import and distribution of ammonia, providing 150,000 cubic meters of tankage capacity for handling refrigerated (-33C) ammonia. The infrastructure is designed to be further scaled in phases and will target a throughput of up to 3.5 million tons of ammonia annually. The facility will be served by a deep-water jetty capable of handling the new generation of very large ammonia carriers up to 230 meters long and 42 meters wide and will include a quay wall with several berths for barges and mega barges to facilitate loading of cold and pressurized ammonia.
The ammonia terminal is anticipated to be in operations by Q4 2028 and shortly after startup, the terminal will be connected to an industrial scale ammonia cracker for cracking imported ammonia to hydrogen.

Ammonia cracking
LBC Vlissingen’s industrial scale ammonia cracking facility will be directly connected to our state-of-the-art ammonia terminal, providing terminal customers with a fully integrated import solution. Hydrogen, cracked from imported ammonia, may then be injected directly into the European Hydrogen Backbone or be loaded onto tube trailers. The ammonia cracking capacity will be scaled in stages to accommodate future market demands.
